WORKING FROM HOME

When the pandemic hit and everyone was sent home, we began by working at the dining room table. And then the kitchen counter. And then the couch. And then the backyard. The kitchen counter again. And finally one of the kids’ bedrooms. Perhaps it was all the moving around that inspired us to recreate the kids’ playroom into a home office. Nicholas definitely needed a space to work and write, and I jumped at the opportunity to transform our home bit by bit. It started with a desk. We grabbed an old oak postmaster’s desk from a neighbor for free. I wore down my elbows stripping, sanding and refinishing it, but it came out perfect. Next was installation of new bookshelves, then painting, caulking, more staining, more sanding…whew. After a month, we completed most of the hard work, and now it was time to decorate. Books, curios, antique furniture and accessories and some nice lamplight, and we were in business, literally! It’s always been a dream of Nicholas’ to have a good home office, and now we have such a wonderful room to work and read and greet us when we walk in the door. And the kids don’t even miss the playroom. How could you when you have all of Dada’s toys to play with!?

In all seriousness, both Nicholas and I are very proud of the work we put in to the new study. For him, it’s a sanctuary. It’s reminiscent of a noir detective’s office or a study you expect to find Mr. Green with a candlestick.
